How to control Bronchitis by Indian
This article provides some important information on bronchitis and asthma (called 'Tamaka Shwaas' in Ayurveda) based on ancient Indian medical practice and the wisdom of sages.
Respiratory Diseases as Viewed by Ancient Sages: Causes, Treatment, and Spiritual Prevention
Hindu scriptures and ancient Ayurvedic texts (Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita) describe respiratory diseases in great detail. What we today call bronchitis (inflammation of the lung tubes) or asthma was categorized by ancient sages as 'respiratory diseases'.
1. Philosophical and Physiological Basis of Disease Origin
According to Ayurveda, our body is composed of five elements and three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha). According to Sage Charaka, respiratory diseases are primarily caused by the vitiation of the Vata and Kapha doshas.
Kapha Dosha: When phlegm accumulates in the lung tubes (Prana Vaha Srotas), the air passage becomes blocked.
Vata Dosha: Vitiated air causes spasms in the lung muscles, making breathing difficult.
2. Pillars of Treatment Prescribed by Ancient Sages
Sages have prescribed three main approaches to treatment: Diet, Lifestyle, and Medicine.
A. Ayurvedic Remedies
In ancient times, sages used herbal extracts and ash:
Vasa (Adhatoda vasica): Also known as 'Adusa'. Sages considered it the best medicine for respiratory diseases because it widens the respiratory tract.
Somalata: Described in the Vedas, Somalata was used to soothe asthma attacks.
Trikatu Churna:
A mixture of dry ginger, black pepper, and long pepper ignites the digestive fire and dissolves phlegm.
Bharangi: It is considered a panacea for chronic cough and bronchitis.
B. Yoga and Pranayama (The Science of Breath)
Maharishi Patanjali, in his "Yoga Sutras," described pranayama as a means of increasing vitality.
Bhastrika Pranayama: It cleanses the lungs like a blacksmith's bellows.
Kapalabhati: It expels toxins from the body.
Kunjal Kriya: Ancient sages would drink salt water on an empty stomach in the morning and then vomit, which cleansed the upper part of the stomach and reduced pressure on the lungs.
3. Panchakarma: Body Purification
To eradicate asthma and bronchitis, sages recommended the practice of "Vamana." In this practice, phlegm is expelled from the body by drinking a medicinal decoction. Additionally, chest massage (abhyanga) with sesame oil and rock salt is prescribed, which loosens the phlegm accumulated in the airways.
4. Hindu Scriptures and Lifestyle Rules (Prevention)
Following the daily routine and seasonal routine described in Hindu scriptures can prevent these diseases:
Waking up in Brahma Muhurta: The fresh morning air is rich in prana vayu (life force), which rejuvenates the lungs.
Agnihotra (Havan): In ancient times, havans were performed in homes. The smoke from mango wood, camphor, and cow ghee destroyed germs in the atmosphere and acted as medicine for the lungs.
Water from a copper vessel: Drinking water stored overnight in a copper vessel calms the phlegm.
5. Spiritual Perspective and Mental Peace
Ancient sages believed that breathing is directly related to the mind. Stress and anger worsen breathing. Therefore, meditation and chanting Om calm the nerves of the lungs and reduce the frequency of attacks.
6. Golden Rules of Eating
The sages have established the principle of 'Hitabhuk, Mitbhuk' (eating healthy and sparingly):
Nishedha (What not to eat): Yogurt, bananas, cold buttermilk, black gram dal, and heavy foods increase phlegm, so avoid them.
Pathya (What to eat): Consume old rice, horse gram dal, drumstick, and warm water. It is recommended to have dinner before sunset.
